Edinburgh New Town: Our Recommendations

Here at Epitome we love being located in the New Town area of Edinburgh. It is an area which boasts stunning architecture filled with art, shopping and eateries. We are going to let you know about some of our favourite places and give you an insight into the area of town in which we are located.

The Archipelago Bakery has just relocated to Dundas Street right next door to Epitome. We eagerly anticipated the opening and it has certainly lived up to our expectations. Archipelago is an organic, artisan bakery selling handmade savoury and sweet treats. They have an extensive selection of delicious breads, cakes, pastries and salads with some also available gluten free. A different selection is available each day either to take away or sit-in. There is a lot of buzz around Edinburgh about this place so we would recommend going to try their salads and a sweet treat and watch the world go by in one of their outside seats.

However if you are looking for something classic; head down the street to Cuckoos Bakery for a coffee and try to choose from their endless selection of cupcakes. Cuckoo’s have been awarded the “Best Cake in Scotland” for two years running. In addition they also serve a gluten free cupcake option. However we recommend you get down fast as they often sell out!

Bramble is hidden gem which is a favourite to many Edinburgh locals. If you are looking for great drink and good music this is the place to go! This bar has a relaxed atmosphere and a unique cocktail menu that you will not find anywhere else in Edinburgh.

New Town Therapy is new to Dundas Street and offers an array of beauty treatments and therapies along with yoga workshops and meditation. There are a range of treatments available and the yoga & meditation classes can be purchased individually or in blocks making it flexible for most schedules. The friendly and skilled therapists are able help and assist you whether you are looking to target pain or simply relax.

Arusha is a contemporary art gallery on Dundas Street exhibiting various artists from across the globe. You may have noticed some of the pieces we have hanging in Epitome which are on loan from Arusha Gallery. The gallery owners have a great eye for incredible contemporary art and are extremely welcoming to those who are knowledgeable or there to help those who require some assistance.

Unicorn Antiques is an amazing antique shop filled with many hidden treasures. They describe themselves as an ‘Aladdin's cave’ which we would agree with! They sell an indescribable amount of many different antiques and it is worth a look around to see what you can find.

The Brotique is a mens store selling purely accessories and other products. This is the kind of shop your husband/partner/brother/dad would be immersed in for hours surrounded by all the cool things. Their selection of products are high quality and unique - perfect for gifts. One of their best purchases has to be the ‘ManHamper’ which is filled with various selections of products depending on what you are looking for. These are the perfect go-to gift. Aside from products, The Brotique also holds events each month. From film nights, to brand evenings. their next event is their Summer Party coming up on the 9th July - details can be found on their website.

Dick’s is a men’s clothes shop which opened in October 2012 carrying a few of the same brands as Epitome. Dick’s sells clothing, accessories and some interiors. Their focus is on independent brands that love their craft, much like Epitome.
